On April 21, 2015 Google released their mobile-friendly update of their search engine algorithm to address this problem. The change was so significant that the update was know as Mobilegeddon. This change placed a great deal of importance on a website’s mobile presence
For mobile design elements requirements included:
- readable text without requiring zoom
- adequate space for tap targets is needed
- no horizontal scrolling should be needed
Google has followed that up with additional updates focused on the importance of mobile-first. So this is critical to your websites success on Google, as well as your user’s experience.
In order to ensure your website offers a user experience that works on handheld devices there are two approaches.
- Create separate versions of the site for each device
- Use responsive design
Clearly the most efficient method is to use responsive design.
